Mainly a wheel thrower, clay came to Chris DePrez more like a coiled pot; a slow building of importance in his life.

In Brooklyn, DePrez studied under Jean Louis Frenk, furthering his skills in glazing, wheel throwing, and mold making. Shortly thereafter, DePrez helped ceramicist Marvin Schwam, owner of Union Square Clay Center, with production orders and managing his studio.

DePrez has always found clay to be a meditative process, with the great challenge of finding the right form and balance in pots. DePrez’s work strives to create pots in which glaze and clay speak together. He enjoys the simple balance in pots with a sense of impermanence or even decay.
